Puerto Rico Islanders Drawn Into CCL Group B

The look of Group B in this year’s CONCACAF Champions League has become a bit more clear as the CFU 1 slot that will play against Salvadorian side Isidro Metapan was won yesterday by the Puerto Rico Islanders. Puerto Rico are a 2003 founded team that currently plays in the North American Soccer League, technically the second level on the American soccer pyramid. After a couple of good results against strong teams in other competitions like a 3-1 win over Santos Laguna in 2009’s CCL and a 4-1 win at Los Angeles in 2010, the Islanders have gotten a bit of a reputation as giant killers in competitions like this. Not bad for such a young club.

Combined with the Santos Laguna/Olimpia draw in the group, we now know the six teams that have a chance at winning Group B and getting through to the knock-out stages in this year’s competition. The Islanders will probably still be the preferred match-up in Colorado’s eyes compared to Metapan.
