The Coaches Poll comprises one-third of the BCS standings along with the Harris Poll and the average of the six computer polls. In the Coaches Poll, Air Force Falcons head coach Troy Calhoun and Colorado Buffaloes head coach Jon Embree each have a vote. USA Today provided a breakdown of the last regular season ballots.

After having the LSU Tigers as the requisite No. 1 team and the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 2, Calhoun had the Stanford Cardinal at No. 3 and the Arkansas Razorbacks at No. 4. The Oklahoma St. Cowboys came in at No. 5. He put the Boise St. Broncos at No. 10, though they finished at No. 6. He also jumped the Michigan Wolverines to No. 8, one of three coaches to do so (Michigan finished at No. 12).

Embree put Oklahoma State at No. 2 and Alabama at No. 3. He had Boise State all the way down at No. 11 and didn't even rank the Baylor Bears.

Boise State was ranked as low as No. 13 by Louisiana Monroe head coach and as high as No. 4 by Fresno State's Pat Hill (since fired) and San Diego State's Rocky Long. Boise State's head coach Chris Petersen ranked his own team at No. 5.
