Peter Forsberg To Return To NHL, Will Play With Avalanche For Remainder Of Season

After Sunday morning's practice, Peter Forsberg announced that he will return to the NHL and play for the Colorado Avalanche, reports Adrian Dater of the Denver Post. Forsberg still needs to work out a contract with the Avalanche, but he is expected to travel with the team to Phoenix for Monday's game against the Coyotes. He will not play in the game, though.

[UPDATE] The Avalanche have signed Forsberg for the rest of the season.

Forsberg, 37, last played in the NHL in the 2007-2008 when he appeared in nine regular season games in March and then in the playoffs for the Avalanche. He has been skating with the Avalanche in practice since Jan. 22.

The return of Forsberg will hopefully jump start the Avalanche, who have sputtered since a six-game winning streak in the middle of December. Since then, the team has only won games back-to-back once (Jan. 14 and 18). They are currently four points out of the last playoff spot.
