It wasn't quite like a phoenix rising from its ashes, but the Colorado Avalanche played a hard-fought game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, losing, 2-3, in overtime. Pittsburgh's Tyler Kennedy picked up the rebound to score the game-winning goal at 4:10.
Joe Vitale started the scoring with a goal for the Penguins in the first period. It was the first of his career. There was another first career goal in this game when Cameron Gaunce scored the Avalanche's second goal of the second period. Chris Stewart had the other Avalanche goal. But shortly after Gaunce's goal, Jordan Staal netted the equalizer.
Peter Budaj made 33 saves on 36 shots while Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 stops.
Though their losing streak extended to nine games, the Avalanche (25-26-7, 57 points) picked up their first point during that span--a small consolation. They will head to the West Coast to face the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.
