The Colorado Avalanche are down 2-0 to the Edmonton Oilers thanks to goals by two unlikely sources. First came a power play goal by Edmonton center Sam Gagner, who found the next for only the second time this year. Then, with only 37 seconds left to play in the period. Oilers winger Ben Eager put a wrister by Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov for only his second goal, and third point, of the season.
The Avalanches had a number of scoring chances in the first period, putting nine shots on net and collecting a power play, though they were obviously unable to cash any of that in. With Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin's goals against average sitting dead at 2.00 on the season, the Avalanche have little margin for error as they attempt to come back from the two goal deficit.
