The NHL All-Star Draft completed its selection process on Friday night when Team Staal and Team Lidstrom alternated picks for rounds. Captain Eric Staal won the coin toss and selected Carolina Hurricanes goalie and teammate Cam Ward with the No. 1 pick. Captain Nicklas Lidstrom then followed with the Tampa Bay Lightning's Steven Stamkos. He leads the goal with 38 goals and 67 points.
Staal used the third overall pick on the Washington Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin. The Boston Bruins' Tim Thomas was the second goalie off the board, going to Team Lidstrom. Staal selected New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist with the next pick (and his brother, Marc, with his next pick). Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury went 18th overall to Lidstrom's team.
From the Colorado Avalanche, center Matt Duchene was selected with the No. 32 pick by Team Lidstrom. Paul Stastny was selected by Team Staal with pick No. 35, the second-to-last pick. Rookie defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk will join Duchene on Lidstrom's team.
