The Colorado Avalanche attempted a late comeback against the Calgary Flames, but fell short, 3-2, on New Year's Eve. Colorado's Daniel Winnik scored a shorthanded goal at 7:45 in the third period to put his team on the board for the first time on Friday night. Tomas Fleischmann scored a second goal at 17:28 (Matt Duchene assist), but that proved too little, too late.
The Flames did all of their damage in the second period, starting with a Tom Kostopoulos goal at 5:53. Under a minute later, Jarome Iginla added the Flames' second goal. Tim Jackman, who assisted on the first goal, netted his fourth goal of the season at 13:23.
Colorado goalie Craig Anderson made 20-of-23 saves, while Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 19-of-21 shots.
The Avalanche close out 2010 with a 20-13-5 record and 45 points. They are now six points behind the Vancouver Canucks for first place in the Northwest division. Colorado plays Vancouver to kick off 2011 on Sunday, Jan 2 at the Pepsi Center. The puck drops at 6:00 p.m. MT.
