Conference Realignment: Boise St. Leaves Mountain West For Big East After Much Hemming And Hawing

Despite being announced as a member of the Big East months ago, the Boise St. Broncos had until June 30 to officially withdraw from the Mountain West Conference. After much speculation and consternation about the decision, the university informed in writing the conference and the teams in the conference that they are no longer a member of the Mountain West, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

The letter arrived ahead of a midnight Saturday deadline for Boise State to notify the MWC of whether the school intended to follow through on its plan to leave the conference after the 2012-13 academic year - primarily for the football team to move to the Big East Conference.

The Broncos, however, have yet to find a home for its Olympic sports starting in 2013. The Big West is the most likely of destinations, and has been speculated for months, but no announcement or agreement has been made.

For now, the Broncos and the San Diego St. Aztecs will be the newest members of the Big East in 2013 after departing the Mountain West.
