2012 bowl projections: Air Force locked in while Boise State eyes Las Vegas

Mountain West bowl spots are becoming clearer with just one game left on most team's slate.

Ron Chenoy-US PRESSWIRE

With just one game left in the regular season, the Air Force Falcons are set for their bowl destination, while the Boise State Broncos hope to be appealing to their desired bowl.

Friday's win over the Hawai'i Warriors -- in which the Falcons did not attempt a single pass -- locked Air Force into the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 29. Representatives from the bowl were in Colorado Springs and extended the invitation to Troy Calhoun and company after the win.

According to projections from SB Nation college football editor Jason Kirk, Air Force would play the Rice Owls in Dallas. Rice is currently 5-6, which mean Kirk is predicting the Owls to beat the UTEP Miners on Saturday. UTEP is 3-8 and just announced the retirement of head coach Mike Price.

Boise State, meanwhile, hopes to remain appealing to the Las Vegas Bowl, which is where Kirk projects the Broncos to land. The Vegas Bowl gets first pick of Mountain West bowl-eligible schools, so even if Boise State doesn't win the conference or shares the conference title, Vegas Bowl decision makers could very well choose the Broncos. Kirk projects Boise State's opponent to be the Arizona Wildcats, currently 7-4 with a game against Arizona State remaining.
