New Mexico vs. Air Force: Falcons look to stay in MWC race

The Lobos and Falcons meet in conference play after posting road wins last week.

Rick Osentoski-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Air Force Falcons look to climb the conference standings this Saturday as they host the New Mexico Lobos at Falcon Stadium.

The Falcons are 2-1 in the Mountain West Conference after a 28-27 victory on the road against the Wyoming Cowboys, in which Air Force claimed the victory after trailing 27-14 late in the third quarter. In addition to Connor Dietz keying the always-potent option attack in a 230-yard rushing effort, the quarterback also threw 7-9 for 141 yards and two touchdowns. But the Falcon defense continued its yardage struggles, allowing the Cowboys 447 yards of offense, close to what the Academy averages giving up per game.

New Mexico is 1-1 in conference and 4-3 overall, as coach Bob Davie has already produced more wins this year than the Lobos garnered in the past three seasons. The Lobos won on the islands last week, defeating Hawaii 35-23. Davie has the Lobos running some option themselves, as Kasey Carrier is averaging 5.6 yards per carry for New Mexico's No. 7 ranked run game. B.R. Holbrook and Cole Gautsche split quarterback duties, with Holbrook being a better passer.
