Military Bowl 2011: Tim Beckman Has Accepted Illinois Job, Unlikely To Coach Toledo In Military Bowl

The Toledo Rockets are preparing for their Military Bowl matchup against the Air Force Falcons in the 2011 Military Bowl on Dec. 28th, but head coach Tim Beckman is now leaving to become the head coach of the University of Illinois before the game is even played. The hiring makes it pretty clear that Beckman will not coach Toledo in the 2011 Military Bowl.

David Fluellen, sophomore running back for the Rockets, certainly doesn't think Beckman will be around for the Bowl game:

Wish ppl would practice what they preach.. Talk about finishing strong how are u finishing strong leaving before a bowl game

Beckman took over Toledo in 2009 and has led the Rockets to a 21-16 record over two seasons, including an 8-4 record this year. The university has scheduled a news conference for 1 p.m. on Friday, and athletic director Mike O'Brien will address Beckman's departure to Illinois. Furthermore he will offer some clarity on who will coach the team in the Military Bowl. Current offensive coordinator Matt Campbell is the leading candidate to be named the next head coach.
