Thirteen is a lucky number for the Northern Colorado Bears. In Earnest Collins' 13th game as the team's head coach, the Bears finally gave him his first victory, a 40-3 victory over the Div. II Colorado Mesa Mavericks on Saturday.
Quarterback Seth Lobato completed 20 of 35 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown pass. Running back Tromaine Davis scored three rushing touchdowns while piling up 88 yards on 20 carries. Chris Morris led receivers with six catches, but his 64 yards were second to Dimitri Stimphil, who had 65 yards on three catches. Stimphil also caught Lobato's touchdown pass.
The Bears are now 1-12 during Collins' tenure. The team went 0-11 in the 2011 season, Collins' first year at the helm, and then lost the season opener to the FBS Utah Utes, 41-0. Still seeking an FCS win, Northern Colorado will play Sacramento State next week. The Hornets beat the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday, 30-28.
