Midway through the first quarter, the Aggies special team unit blocked a Utah punt and recovered the ball in the endzone for the game's first score. With seconds remaining in the first quarter, Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton connected with Joe Hill for the Aggies' second touchdown. The score remained 13-0 after a missed extra point by kicker Brock Warren. Utah State missed an opportunity to extend their lead, missing a 45-yard field goal attempt late in the second quarter.

Utah's Coleman Peterson made a 42-yard field goal as the half expired to bring the Utes within 10.

Keeton leads the Aggies, with 101 passing yards in the first half, completing 11 of 15 attempts.

Wynn was held to 47 passing yards in the first half, completing 6 of 11 attempts, but left the game with 1:04 remaining in the half after a hard hit on an incomplete pass to Utah running back John White IV . Wynn suffered a left shoulder injury and will not return to the game. He was replaced by senior Jon Hays.
