The 2012 BMW Championship, the third event in the FedExCup Playoffs, begins on Thursday at Crooked Sticks GC in Carmel, Ind., and Rory McIlroy will look to widen his lead for the championship. He moved up from No. 4 to the top spot after winning the 2012 Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston. That pushed Nick Watney down to No. 2 and in a 1,331-point deficit.
Tiger Woods, Brandt Snedeker and Louis Oosthuizen round out the top five and are the only golfers within 2,000 points of McIlroy. With Watney and Woods, McIlroy will be paired with them for the first two rounds of the BMW Championship.
Martin Laird, a Colorado State alumnus, dropped from No. 40 to No. 50 in the standings after missing the cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship. He will be paired with Vijay Singh and Brian Harman.
