Record-wise, Utah and Arizona St. are in the same place heading into their Pac-12 opener at 2-1, but they don't have very much in common. The two programs started the season in very different places and their opening three games have gone very differently.

Utah was hoping to challenge USC for the Pac-12 South title and while they haven't done anything to harm that pursuit (obviously, since they haven't played a conference game), the Utes haven't exactly impressed so far this season. They lost at Utah St. and while a win over rival BYU may put some fire back in the program, the Utes don't look quite as good as some would have hoped before the season.

On the flip side is Arizona St., which has a new head coach in Todd Graham. The Sun Devils didn't have much in the way of expectations, but they have impressed in every game. They throttled Northern Arizona and they pasted Illinois before losing their first game of the season last week in a close, competitive game at Missouri.

The teams are very different at quarterback too. The Utes expected Jordan Wynn to lead them, but a shoulder injury ended his season and career, laving Jon Hayes to take the snaps. The Sun Devils have Taylor Kelly under center after he won the job in the preseason and the sophomore has been excellent thus far.

On paper, the Utes appear to be the better team, but the Sun Devils have been good so far this season. Nothing has gone according to plan for either team, which is good for Arizona St.
