The UTEP Miners scored 20 points in the first quarter to pave the way to a 41-28 victory over the New Mexico St. Aggies on Saturday night. Quarterback Nick Lamaison threw for 309 yards and four touchdown passes in the win.
Lamaison threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter, a 3-yard strike to Kevin Perry and a 32-yard connection with Jordan Leslie. Josh Bell scored earlier in the quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run. Kicker Steven Valadez missed the extra-point attempt.
Craig Wenrick (17 yards) and Mike Edwards (36 yards) caught the other touchdown passes from Lamaison.
Autrey Golden led the Miners' ground attack with 64 of the 176 yards. Bell score scored both rushing touchdowns, however.
New Mexico State quarterback Andrew Manley went 18-of-43 for 277 yards and three touchdown passes. Kemonte' Bateman grabbed seven passes for 133 yards and one touchdown while Austin Franklin hauled in seven passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Franklin's longest reception was the 37-yard touchdown.
New Mexico State (1-2) hosts New Mexico next Saturday. UTEP (1-2) goes on the road to face Wisconsin next week.
