After trailing early in London, the United States has taken the lead in both overall medal count and gold medal count at the 2012 Summer Olympics. With a variety of different victories on Thursday, including a gold medal in women's soccer, the Americans have taken a 90-80 advantage over the Chinese in overall medal count with just a few days remaining.
The U.S. now has the most of each color of medal, holding a 39-37 advantage over China in golds, a 25-24 advantage over China in silvers and a 26-23 advantage over Russia in bronzes. That adds up to a sizable lead in total medals, as no nation is within ten medals of the U.S. and the second-closest nation (Russia) is 34 medals behind.
