Fort Collins native Janay DeLoach advanced to the finals for the women's long jump after she earned an automatic bid with her 6.81-meter jump. She landed the distance on her first go, easily passing the necessary 6.70 meters necessary for an automatic bid and winning Group B by 0.13 meters.
According to DeLoach, that was the intention from the start:
"That was the plan, to do a one-and-done so I can stay as fresh as I can to go for the gold (Wednesday)," DeLoach said.
Though it was her hope to finish quickly, she probably did not anticipate finishing so well. Her 6.81 was second only to Britain's Shara Proctor, who hit 6.83 on her first jump. Now that Deloach has handled her Tuesday events, she will look to parlay her success on the track and pit to Wednesday's final.
