The Republic of Korea added to its impressive medal total early on Sunday after two of its competitors finished in the top 3 of the men's 50m pistol. Gold was taken by Jong-Oh Jin, while fellow countryman Young Rae Choi took home silver. Bronze was won by Zhiwei Wang of China. American and Montana native Nickolaus Mowrer finished at No. 15 in qualifying, and thus did not advance to the final round, which only takes eight competitors.
In the event, scores from the qualification round carry over to the final round. Heading into that final round, Jin was in fourth place, behind his eventual fellow medal winners and Xuan Vinh Haong of Vietnam. But Jin blew the competition away in the final round, scoring a 100.0 (maximum is 109.0) to jump into first. Choi, who was in first heading into the final round put up a 92.5, which was the third lowest in the round. Making the cut even deeper for Choi is that Jin only beat by him a half-point, 662-to-661.5.
