The United States won six medals on Friday to maintain its lead in the overall Olympic medal count. With 43 total medals, Team USA is just one medal ahead of second place China. The Americans also have won one more gold medal (21) than the Chinese (20).

Five of the medals awarded to the U.S. on Friday came in swimming events. Missy Franklin took home gold in the women's 200m backstroke, while Elizabeth Beisel took bronze. Michael Phelps added to his record medal total with a win in the men's 100m fly. Katie Ledecky won the women's 800m freestyle final and Cullen Jones nabbed second in the men's 50m freestyle final.
