Missy Franklin reached the 100 meter freestyle final on Thursday, but she failed to medal in the event. Earlier having advanced to the finals of the 200 meter backstroke, Franklin finished in fifth during the freestyle event. She posted a time of 53.64, 0.64 seconds behind gold medal winner behind the Netherlands' Ranomi Kromowidjojo, who set an Olympic record at 53.00 seconds.
Belarus' Aliaksandra Herasimenia came in second, trailing by 0.38 seconds. China's Yi Tang took the bronze medal at 53.44. The only other United States swimmer in the final race was Jessica Hardy and she finished in eighth place, +1:02 behind Kromowidjojo.
Franklin will compete for a gold medal in the 200 meter backstroke on Friday. She currently owns two gold medals and one bronze this summer.
