On Monday, Centennial, CO, native Kevin Gausman made his professional debut nearly one month after he signed his contract with the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles sent him to the short-season New York-Penn League to play with their affiliate club, the Aberdeen IronBirds.
Though he took a no-decision after pitching just three innings, Gausman struck out two and did not allow any baserunners. The strikeouts came back-to-back in the first inning, one a called strike three, the other a swinging strikeout.
The IronBirds won the game, 4-1, over the State College Spikes. Back-to-back doubles in the first inning put Aberdeen up 3-0.
The fourth overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, Gausman will make his home debut at Ripken Stadium on Sunday against the Connecticut Tigers at 12:35 p.m. MT.
