London Olympics 2012, Men's Cycling: Ryder Hesjedal, Taylor Phinney Look To Medal In Individual Time Trial

Cyclist Ryder Hesjedal of Boulder-based Garmin-Sharp has had a disappointing 2012 Olympics so far. In his only race— the men's road race— he finished in 63rd place, but he can redeem himself today during the men's individual time trials. For Boulder-born Taylor Phinney, the situation is a bit different, but also a bit similar. Phinney will be looking for his first medal today as well, but he's already come extremely close to the podium: in the road race, he finished fourth.

Both riders will have to overcome some obstacles, including Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins and Fabian Cancellara, one of the best riders in the world. Wiggins and Cancellara will have a distinct advantage in Wednesday's event, as they are the second-to-last and last in the racing order, meaning they will likely be aware of the times that they must beat in order to medal.

The trial course is 44km long, and takes the riders through southwest London, beginning and ending at Hampton Court Palace. The riders start racing every 90 seconds, with the winner being the one who finishes the course in the fastest time.
