The London Olympics got underway on Saturday with 38 total medals awarded. China is in the early lead with total medals (6) and gold medals (4). Italy and the United States are tied for second with five total medals, but Team USA has just one gold medal: Ryan Lochte's win in the 400m IM. Michael Phelps failed to medal in that race.
Colorado's Missy Franklin won her first Olympic medal when she helped her team win bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
Kazakhstan's Alexander Vinokourov was one of the surprise winner's when he captured gold in the men's cycling road race. Boulder native Taylor Phinney finished in fourth place.
