2012 London Olympics: USA Wins First Two Medals

With the first weekend of the 2012 London Olympics officially underway, the United States has had a strong start, including winning two medals.

Ryan Lochte brought home the first gold medal of the 2012 London Olympics for the United States, winning the 400 IM in dominant fashion. Michael Phelps, who is competing in his final Olympic competition, finished in a surprising 4th place.

The Unites States men's archery team had surprising success, winning its first medal since 2000. The archery team fell to Italy and had to settle for a silver medal, but still exceeded most expectations by earning a medal.

After a comeback win in their opening game, the US women's soccer team dominated Columbia to practically ensure a spot in the Quarterfinals. In the 3-0 victory, the women were in control from the start-to-finish.

The US women's basketball team wasn't as convincing in its first game, struggling to a 81-56 victory over Croatia. The game was actually very close early in the fourth quarter, but the US pulled away down the stretch to open the competition with a win.
