The 2012 Summer Olympics in London are one week away and Colorado offers a strong contingent of athletes for Team USA. The headliner is, of course, 17-year-old swimmer Missy Franklin from Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora. She will compete in seven events, the most ever for U.S. woman. Those events are the 100 meter backstroke and freestyle, the 200 meter backstroke and freestyle and then three relays: the 4x100 meter free relay, the 4x200 meter free relay and the 4x100 medley relay.
Some other athletes from Colorado or with a connection to the state include: Emma Coburn, a Colorado Buffaloes alum, who will compete in the 3000 meter steeplechase; Taylor Phinney and Timmy Duggan of Boulder are both competing in cycling; David Herman of Denver in BMX; Shalane Flanagan, originally from Boulder, is in the Marathon; and Taylor Ritzel of Aurora is on the rowing team.
And though she is from Palmer, Alaska, trap shooter Corey Cogdell is the girlfriend of Denver Broncos defensive tackle Mitch Unrein.
Check back in over the next few days as we preview these athletes and more.
