Another Denver native, Bonnie Brandon of Cherry Creek, finished fifth with a time of 1:00:76 to qualify for the finals.

Here's what Franklin had to say about her effort:

"It felt so good to get the first race out of the way," a beaming Franklin said afterward. "It's so nice, like first-race nerves. I'm super, super happy with my time. I didn't think I'd go out that fast. "I felt amazing."

"I haven't been thinking about it," Franklin said. "I was nervous about that first race but right now I'm just excited."
