Ryder Hesjedal is still atop the general classification for the 2012 Giro d'Italia after Stage 9. The Garmin-Barracuda rider gained the maglia rosa (pink jersey) over the weekend when the race went through the medium mountains. Monday's stage was flat and gave way to Francisco Ventoso Alberdi grabbing the victory. A crash near the finish line prevented Matthew Harley Goss and Mark Cavendish from challenging for the victory.
Christian Vande Velde (+1:18) and Peter Stetina (+1:23) are Hesjedal's only teammates still within striking distance. the next closest teammate is Jack Bauer at +48:13.
Stage 10 is a return to the medium mountains with a ride from Civitavecchia to Assisi.
