Nebraska-Omaha vs. Denver: Pioneers looking for winning streak

The Denver Pioneers can get a winning streak going for the first time this season if they can beat Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday.

Andrew Fielding-US PRESSWIRE

With a 2-5 record, the Denver Pioneers basketball team has started off the 2012-2013 season a lot slower than they were hoping they would. With a win over Mercer on Dec. 5, they finally have a chance to get a legitimate winning streak in the books for the first time this year when they face the similarly slumping Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks (2-9) on Saturday night.

Sophomore guard Royce O'Neale will need to be at the top of his game once again if the Pios want to make it two straight. He put in a career-high 22 points during the win over Mercer and has been the spark that has driven the Pios offense the past several games, even as most of those have ended in losses. Having the game at Magness should spark DU as well. They have been almost unbeatable at their home arena in recent seasons and having a win in theirT pockets should boost confidence.

This will only be the third time ever that the Pioneers have played the Mavericks, with Denver taking the two previous games in 1943 and 1957.

The game will be at Magness Arena at 7 p.m. MT.
