If the initial kickoff by Boise State was any indication of how its night would end, the Broncos should have been worried. San Diego State's Colin Locket returned it 100 yards for the touchdown. In a game that was neck-and-neck all the way through, the Aztecs were able to distance themselves just enough from Boise State to pull off the upset victory, 21-19.
Following the Aztecs' opening return, Boise State went on to score two unanswered touchdowns. D.J. Harper had one in the first quarter on a 1-yard rush. The Broncos went for two and failed. The missed attemp would come back to haunt the team late.
With 2:14 remaining before the half, Harper scored his second touchdown of the game, this time on a 16-yard rush. The Broncos played it safe this time and kicked a successful point after. Boise State was up 13-7 heading into the locker room.
Following Boise's suit, SDSU scored two unanswered touchdowns of its own. In the third quarter, Adam Muema rushed for a 3-yard TD, bringing the Aztecs within one point of Boise.
With 12:20 to go in the fourth, Aztec Walter Kazee scored on a 1-yard rush. After the successful PAT, SDSU was up 21-13. Boise State battled back and scored a touchdown with five and a half minutes to go. Like they did in the first quarter, the Broncos were unsuccessful in their attempt for two points. Had Boise State made its two attempts at two points, the game would have been tied. Instead, the Aztecs took the upset victory, 21-19.
Box Score Hero: Running back Adam Muema of SDSU did most of the heavy lifting for the Aztecs. He carried the ball 25 times for 127 yards and a touchdown.
Rankings Ramifications: The upset by SDSU will push Boise State back in the rankings, possibly out of the Top 25.
But Did They Cover? The Aztecs didn't need the 16 1/2 points after all.
Next Week's Schedule: The Aztecs welcome Air Force to San Diego. Boise State is headed to Hawaii.
