Conner Smith to start at quarterback against Hawai'i

Colorado State head coach Jim McElwain announced on Monday that Conner Smith will start against Hawai'i.

Colorado St. Rams head coach Jim McElwain announced at his weekly press conference that redshirt freshman Conner Smith will get the start at quarterback this Saturday, as the Rams take on the Hawai'i Warriors. This will be the third starting quarterback that Colorado State has started this year, and if Smith performs well he could hold onto the job going forward:

"He's our starter right now," McElwain said at his weekly news conference. "Here's your opportunity; let's take it, let's run with it. I'm not looking in any other direction. ... Now, it's Conner's team, and I'm excited to see him play, just like I was excited to see Garrett [Grayson] and M.J. [McPeek]."

Smith is getting the start this week due to M.J. McPeek still nursing a sore shoulder that he suffered on Oct. 17 against San Diego State. That game was the first action that Smith received this year, and he went 18-of-22 for 165 yards plus a pick in the 38-14 loss.

McElwain did say that McPeek is going to be available as a reserve if Smith does go down with an injury. Opening day starter Garrett Grayson was thought to maybe be back from his broken collarbone, but he will spend at least another week out of the line up.

To have three quarterbacks ready on the roster, the team spent time during the bye week preparing true freshman Craig Leonard just in case he is called into Saturday's game.
