The Colorado Rockies were swept by the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday afternoon in an 8-6 loss, but they fought Roy Halladay all game long. But first, Jason Hammel's (6-11, 4.88 ERA) first-inning adventure had to be endured. He began the game by walking Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Chase Utley. Luckily, he got Ryan Howard to strike out for the first out of the game. Hunter Pence hit a sacrifice fly before Raul Ibanez struck out to end the inning.
The Rockies came back and took the lead in the bottom of the inning on two errors committed by Ryan Howard on one play and a Troy Tulowitzki sacrifice fly. Hammel though gave it all back and more in the second inning on a couple of singles by Rollins and Utley and a two-run double by Howard.
Roy Halladay (14-4, 2.55 ERA) wasn't his normal good self as he did allow five runs in seven innings. Eliezer Alfonzo and Todd Helton were responsible for the three additional runs the Rockies scored in the second, third and fifth innings.
In the fourth inning, Hammel threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Roy Halladay attempted to score from third on it and was called safe by home plate Jerry Meals. Replay showed that Halladay was likely out, but it wasn't as a bad as the 19th inning call he missed last week. That was the sixth and final run Hammel allowed.
Rex Brothers allowed a two-run home run to Ryan Howard in the sixth inning. Todd Helton brought the Rockies a little closer with a solo home run (12), but that was the end of the offense. Brad Lidge picked up his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 inning.
The Rockies (51-60, 26-29 home) host the Washington Nationals for a four-game set that begins on Thursday.
