The Colorado Rapids will play their first ever CONCACAF Champions League match tomorrow and it’s going to be an interesting match-up between them and a team that not many Americans will know anything about — El Salvadorian champions Isidro Metapan.
Sanna Nyassi and Tyrone Marshall have both played against Metapan before as they were both starters against Metapan in last season’s group stage as the Sounders defeated Metapan 2-1 on aggregate. The roster for this match is a complete mystery though, as we have no idea just how seriously the Rapids will take this opportunity compared to league play. Will we see a Omar Cummings – Sanna Nyassi group up top? Will Pablo Mastroeni and Jeff Larentowicz take the field rather than Ross LaBauex and Joseph Nane? It’s a mystery and we’re not going to know until right before kickoff just how excited the fans can get about this one.
Although the Rapids probably won’t expect a very large crowd to come out for the group stage CCL matches – at least until Santos Laguna comes to town and all of the FMF fans in the area will likely take note – there will be an interesting dynamic as the BSG and Pid Army will be forced to move off the supporters terraces due to CONCACAF rules and into sections 104 and 105.
The Rapids have a chance to get a win in their first ever CCL match at home against a team that we know is beatable by MLS squads. It’s time to take the opportunity!
