MLB Draft 2011 Sees Four Colorado Products Selected On Day 2

The state of Colorado saw four players selected on Day 2 of the 2011 MLB Draft. The New York Yankees kicked things off when they selected from Grandview HS in Aurora C Greg Bird. He's a left bat who may head to Arkansas. However, the Yankees will likely throw above slot money at him to see if he will sign.

The Arizona Diamondbacks dipped into Colorado in the 24th round when they from Smoky Hills HS in Aurora RHP Matt Ogden. He seems more likely to be a Michigan Wolverine in 2012. The Rockies dipped into their own backyard in the 24th round as well, taking Regis Jesuit OF Connor McKay. In a similar pattern, he will likely head to Kansas for college.

The only non-high school Colorado pick came in the 20th round when the Chicago Cubs selected RHP Arturo Maltos-Garcia from Lamar Community College. But he has a commitment to New Mexico that he is likely to pick.

In 2012, the state of Colorado may have an even higher draft pick with RHP Kevin Gausman draft-eligible as a sophomore. Gausman went to LSU after being drafted in 2010, but could easily be one of the top pitchers taken in 2012. He put up a 3.51 ERA in 14 starts and struck out 86 in 89.2 innings for a 36-20 Tigers team.
