College World Series 2011 Results: Cal's Run In Omaha Ends With 8-1 Loss To Virginia

The storybook run the Cal Bears had been putting together this week in the 2011 College World Series came to a crashing end on Thursday night. The Virginia Cavaliers won, 8-1, to advance to the Final Four of the College World Series.

Virginia, up 2-0 in the top of the sixth, struck for four runs. It started with a Kenny Swab single that turned into a single and a run scored as Cal center fielder Darrel Matthews fielded the ball improperly. A couple of single and a couple of doubles put three more runs on the board. The Cavs added two more in the top of the ninth.

The Bears put their lone run of the game on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Virginia starter Tyler Wilson was dominant on the night, but two singles put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Cody Winiarski relieved Wilson and allowed a single up the middle to allow the run. WIlson's final line was 7.2 innings, one run on five hits, zero walks and five strikeouts.

Virginia will need to beat South Carolina twice if it hopes to advance to the championship series.
