College World Series 2011 Results: Virginia Outlasts Cal, 4-1

The Virginia Cavaliers advanced to the winners' bracket in the 2011 College World Series with a 4-1 victory over the California Golden Bears. It was a pitchers' duel for most of the game late into the game before the Cavs scored in their final two frames.

Virginia started the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single and a walk before a ground out advanced the runners to second and third. John Hicks and Steven Proscia singled and hit a sac fly, respectively, to put two runs in the board. In the bottom of the eighth, Jared King tripled in a run and Ben Werman added an RBI single immediately after for a 4-0 lead.

Virginia's Danny Hultzen went 6.1 innings, held the Bears scoreless and  struck out six. He was 0-for-2 with two walks as the team's designated hitter. Tyler Wilson allowed Cal's lone run in the top of the ninth on two singles. Branden Kline came in for the final out, a fly ball caught the by Steven Proscia.

The Cavs were unable to score on Cal start Erik Johnson, who allowed just two hits in the innings. He did, however, walk five.
