Animal Kingdom Wins Kentucky Derby 2011, But Headwear Also A Victor

Animal Kingdom won the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby with a later charge down the final stretch, emerging from the bunched middle to finish ahead of Nehro, Mucho Macho Man and Shackleford.

The next leg of the Triple Crown takes place on Saturday, May 21 at the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, MD. If Animal Kingdom is lucky enough to take that as well, then comes the Belmont Stakes on July 11 in Elmont, NY--yes, two months after the Derby and over a month after the Preakness. The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978. Will Animal Kingdom join him?

But the Derby is not just about the horses. Hats and other headwear are usually biggest conversations starters and maybe the second-most talked about subject after the horses in the races. For example, take a look at the hat skier and Vail, CO resident Lindsey Vonn wore during the event:

Loops and odd angles. I don't get it, but that's what the Kentucky Derby likes. Maria Menounos' accoutrement is another odd one as well. But, hey, click on the photo to enlarge it and look in between the two lovely ladies. That guy is a total win for acting like an idiot during the Derby.
