NHL Playoffs 2011: 2nd Round Update, 5/13

Western Conference

San Jose Sharks 3, Detroit Red Wings 2 -- The Sharks had lost every advantage in this series after going up 3-0 after three games and were under extreme pressure to advance to the Western Conference Finals for the second straight year. But Detroit never gave up, winning three straight games in comeback fashion to force a Game Seven. Unfortunately for Hockeytown, their historic comeback fell just short. Devin Setoguchi converted a gorgeous pass from behind the Red Wings net into a power play goal during the first period, the first score of the game. At the end of that period, Logan Couture forced a rare turnover from Detroit forward Henrik Zetterbergin the Red Wings zone into an unassisted goal past goalie Jimmy Howard.

Detroit came back in the second period, as Zetterberg beat Antti Niemi to give the Red Wings some hope in a game where they were manhandled by a more physical Sharks team. San Jose forward Patrick Marleau scored the eventual game (and series) winning goal at 12:13 in the third period, his first point of the entire series. The Sharks advance to their second straight Conference Finals despite being outshot 40-30 by the Red Wings in the decisive Game Seven. They now face the top seeded Vancouver Canucks, who have had almost a week to rest after defeating the Nashville Predators in six games.

San Jose wins the series, 4-3.
