The Utah Utes started the scoring in the 2011 Sun Bowl with a touchdown on its opening drive of the game, taking a 7-0 lead. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets had a 1st-and-20 after an offensive pass interference call and then proceeded to move the ball up just 13 more yards. Utah then took over on its own 27-yard line and drove 73 yards for the score.
Utes quarterback Jon Hays had a 35-yard pass to DeVonte Christopher, putting the team solidly into Georgia Tech territory at the 38-yard line. Hays came up with a 31-yard pass to Luke Matthews a few plays later, putting the ball at the two-yard line. After John White IV failed to get the necessary two yards, Hays found Shawn Asiata for a one-yard touchdown pass.
