The Colorado Avalanche are holding a 2-1 lead over the Phoenix Coyotes after one period on Thursday night as they try to bounce back from the recent loss to Winnipeg. They've already scored more goals than they did in that 4-1 defeat to the Jets.
It was the Avalanche getting an early lead on a goal from Kevin Porter, his third of the year. The Coyotes matched that a few minutes later with Mikkel Boedker's sixth goal of the season. Stefan Elliot got the lead back for the Avalanche by responding to Phoenix's goal not long after, as the goaltenders have struggled to keep the puck out of the net so far. Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov had allowed one goal in five shots while Phoenix goalie Jason LaBarbera has allowed two in 11 shots.
