While the UNLV Rebels haven't had much success on the gridiron this season, it has been a different story early on for the Rebels on the hard court. Fresh off a 90-80 victory over the then-No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels, the Rebels needed double overtime to take care of the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 94-88, on Wednesday night.
UNLV Mike Moser scored 34 points and pulled down 10 boards (six on the offensive glass) for the double-double. He hit on six of nine three-pointers as part of his 12-of-18 shooting. Chace Stanback was second on the team with 19 points and made nine of 10 free throws. He hit the game-tying three that sent the game to a second overtime period at 84-84.
The Gauchos' Orlando Johnson scored 36 points in the loss, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished the ball out for four assists, stole the ball three times and blocked two shots. The rest of the Gauchos' starting lineup combined to score 32 points. Greg Somogyi scored just four points, but he had the game-tying layup with one second left in the second half.
The Rebels are now 8-0 and have games against the Wichita St. Shockers and Cal State San Marcos before they face the Wisconsin Badgers, the No. 7 team that just lost to North Carolina.
