Alabama-Huntsville Chargers Hockey To Drop From DI To Club Level After Season

In the grand scheme of things, a 7-2 loss to the Air Force Falcons on Saturday night isn't the most important thing right now to the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers. On Monday, the school announced that at the conclusion of this season the team will drop from Division I status back to the club level.

The hockey operating budget, according to the university, cost three times as much as the rest of the men's athletics department combined. The Chargers are the only independent team on the Division I level, making scheduling tougher. Their travels this season take them to Colorado, Minnesota, Maine and the rest of New England. Being a team from the Deep South does not help.

The school will honor its scholarships until completion and help any student who would like to transfer. Still, it is a sad day in college hockey when a program needs to fall down to club status.
