Connecticut won the tangled Big East with an 8-4 record, but they are unranked which is a first for a BCS bowl game to have one of their participants not be ranked. Also, Connecticut lost by two touchdowns to 8-4 Temple who did not get invited to a bowl game. While Connecticut does have a less then stellar record they do have the second best rusher in the nation with Jordan Toman who averaged 143 yards per game and had 14 touchdowns. Also, the Connecticut defense stepped up during their five game winning streak that sealed the Big East title.

Oklahoma's Bob Stoops was known as Big Game Bob, but that moniker is no longer valid since he has not won a BCS bowl game since the 2002 Rose Bowl. From then until now the BCS bowl game losing streak has spanned four bowl games. This is the fourth appearance by Oklahoma to the Fiesta Bowl and their last two came as upsets when West Virginia beat them in the 2007 game and the 2006 game was the Boise State game where the infamous hook-and-ladder play.

No surprise that Oklahoma is a favorite 14 point favorite.
