The Colorado Avalanche announced today that its second-tier minor-league affiliate this season will be the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League.

The Oilers replace the now-defunct Charlotte Checkers of the ECHL in that role, which amounts to a "AA" minor-league affiliate under the "AAA-equivalent" Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League.

The Oilers become Denver's second minor league affiliate from Tulsa, as the Drillers are the Colorado Rockies AA club. Tulsa seems to be about as dissimilar to Denver as you can find, as evidenced by the hubbub over the building of a new local bike trail (we have more than a few of those running through Denver), but maybe it really is the "Paris of Oklahoma" . At this rate we may have to start calling Tulsa, "Denver-Lite".
