Colorado just blew Houston out of the water today, scoring the most goals that they’ve scored all season long and keeping a clean sheet even with their goaltender making his first ever MLS appearance.
Colorado struck three times in the first 23 minutes of play, with Jamie Smith getting his first ever MLS goal only two minutes in off of a diving Pat Onstad. Omar Cummings took a great cross off of Conor Casey in the 16th minute, and Casey himself finished off the carnage in the 23rd minute taking a rebound off of a Mehdi Ballouchy shot and heading it into the wide open net. Lovel Palmer was red carded ten minutes into the match after he and Pablo Mastroeni collided violently.
The scoring stopped after that, but there was still nothing to speak of on Houston’s offense. Ian Joyce got the start in goal with Matt Pickens getting the night off. He only had to make a couple of saves, but he looked impressive over all, especially on a fantastic save in the 40th minute off of Brian Mullan.
A few historical tid-bits from tonight; Casey’s 37th goal of his Rapids career tied Paul Spencer for 2nd overall in goals scored all-time as a Rapid. (The jumbotron accidentally flashed a graphic saying that he had scored his 39th, which would give him the lead in Rapids goals all time.) Also, Omar Cummings’ goal that made it 2-0 was the 600th goal ever scored in Rapids history.
The Rapids will face Chivas USA next on September 4th.
