It's nearly the end of August and the Rockies are 9-10 this month. That kind of record isn't going to cut it if the team wants to make the playoffs. They're 11 games back in the NL West, so barring a complete collapse by the Padres an NL West crown is unlikely. The Wild Card is a bit more attainable, with the Phillies holding only a seven game lead in that category.
But the playoffs are more a pipe dream at this point than anything else. The Rockies need to win on the road, which as mentioned a few days ago in Mile High Buzz is a hard thing for the Rockies to do. Huston Street needs to regain his confidence when closing games, or Jim Tracy should try Matt Belisle there. Oh, and the offense needs to score more than one run per game. At this rate, Ubaldo Jimenez may not win his 18th game this season. That would truly be disappointing.
At any rate, the Rockies open a three-game series against the Braves tonight at 6:40 p.m. MT. Tim Hudson duels Jason Hammel.
