College Football Rankings, Week 12: Oregon Survives Scare From California; Air Force Defeats New Mexico

It was a very interesting weekend for the top teams in college football, and the rankings will reflect that come Sunday evening. The No. 1 Oregon Ducks escaped Berkeley with a 15-13 victory over the Cal Golden Bears, due in large part to a failed two-point conversion and a missed field goal by the Bears. No. 2 Auburn was down 21-7 to Georgia at the end of the first quarter, but then scored 42 points over the last three quarters to win, 49-31. So much for any distraction coming from Cam Newton's recent troubles with the NCAA.

In Mountain West action, No. 3 TCU survived a tough game against San Diego State, 40-35. The Horned Frogs were down 14-0 in the first quarter, but quarterback Andy Dalton turned things on and finished with 240 passing yards and four touchdowns. Unranked Notre Dame embarrassed the No. 14 Utah Utes, 28-3. This won't help TCU in the latest BCS standings, as their 47-7 victory over Utah will not look as good in the computer calculations. The Boise State Broncos may benefit from this turn of events.

The Air Force Falcons improved to 7-4 on the season after a 48-23 victory over the New Mexico Lobos. Expect the Falcons to receive more consideration for the Top 25 polls but still find themselves among the last few teams left out.
