Alex Smith is out, former Heisman winner Troy Smith is in when the 49ers take on the Broncos this Sunday at London's Wembley Stadium.
Smith suffered a separated left shoulder during last Sunday's loss to the previously winless Carolina Panthers and is expected to miss three to four weeks. Former Houston Texan David Carr replaced Alex Smith against the Panthers, but the 49ers have decided to go with the third stringer against Denver.
"Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win this game," Singletary said. "He has enough of the offense to play. The bottom line is I think for where we are, Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win the game."
The Broncos should expect to see a very heavy dose of Frank Gore this weekend. The fans in London are getting a game between two teams with poor records to date, but with the quality of the San Francisco defense, it could turn out to be a pretty great game.
