With an opportunity to win their series against the San Diego Padres, the Colorado Rockies couldn't deliver at the plate and fell 3-2 in the series-finale. Christian Friedrich was solid on the mound for Colorado, pitching five innings and allowing only two earned runs in the no-decision.

The Rockies generated all of their offense in the opening two innings of the game. Marco Scutaro got Colorado on the board in the opening inning with an RBI single. After San Diego tied the game in the first, DJ LeMahieu gave the Rockies a 2-1 lead with an RBI double. LeMahieu was the only player to record multiple hits for the Rockies.

With the score tied in the 7th inning, the Padres took the lead courtesy of a Will Venable single that drove in Everth Cabrera.

Both pitchers have been strong throughout the game, with each allowing only two earned runs. Christian Friedrich allowed only three hits and struck out two batters in five innings for the Rockies, while Ross Ohlendorf has struck out six batters through six innings.

At the plate, the Rockies scored in both the first and second innings. Marco Scutaro drove in the first run of the game in the opening inning. DJ LeMahieu then drove in Josh Rutledge on a double in the second inning.

Drew Pomeranz Injury: Pitcher's Tuesday Start To Be Delayed

Colorado Rockies pitcher Drew Pomeranz will have his next start be delayed by soreness in his throwing arm, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. It's unclear whether the present injury will require a trip to the disabled list, but he'll test his arm by playing catch tomorrow before a decision is made.

According to Renck, the Rockies will either replace Pomeranz with Carlos Torres or promote a pitcher from Triple-A to help out. Whoever gets the nod will start on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which is when Pomeranz was scheduled to pitch.

Torres, 29, hasn't started in Colorado this season, although he's spent his time with Triple-A Colorado Springs in the rotation. Over nine relief appearances with the Rockies this year, Torres has a 2.19 ERA with eight strikeouts and eight walks.

Rockies Vs. Padres Preview: Colorado Looks To Take Series On Sunday

The Colorado Rockies are guaranteed to leave California in last place in the N.L. West, but they can salvage their weekend series vs. the San Diego Padres with a win on Sunday. The Rockies, who lost 9-5 on Friday, are coming off of an 8-6 extra innings victory on Saturday night that was their longest game of the season.

The two teams have scored 28 combined runs in the first two games, and we may be in store for another high-scoring game on Sunday. The starting pitchers for each team— Christian Friedrich for the Rockies and Ross Ohlendorf for the Padres— sport ERAs close to six, and that may allow both lineups to defy PETCO Park's status as the premier run suppresser in the National League.

The good news for Colorado is that Friedrich has been far better away from Coors Field this year, posting a 3.79 road ERA in seven starts. Friedrich has also shut down San Diego in two starts this season, giving up only two earned runs in 11 innings while striking out 12 batters.

Rockies Vs. Padres Final Score: Colorado Win 8-6 In 13th Inning

The Colorado Rockies (36-57) bested the San Diego Padres (40-56) in a 12-inning slugfest that featured 14 total runs despite only 1 home run.

SP Jeff Francis pitched the first five frames, but gave up 5 earned runs. He still departed with the lead, however, as the Rockies mounted two comebacks in the fourth and fifth innings for a 6-5 lead heading into the eighth. But, in the bottom of the eighth, with RP Matt Belisle pitching, C Yasmani Grandal knocked soft liner to left field, scoring LF Carlos Quentin and tying the game at 8-8.

The Rockies did not post a major threat again until the top of the 12th, when a 2-out single from INF Jordan Pacheco and C Ramon Hernandez gave Colorado a 8-6 lead, and the eventual win.

Rockies Injury Update: Pomeranz, Rosario To Miss Time With Injuries

The Colorado Rockies will have a pair of rookies on the mend. According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, LHP Drew Pomeranz is struggling with a sore arm and may have his next start pushed back a few days. Meanwhile, C Wilin Rosario has an ankle injury that might send him to the DL, according to manager Jim Tracy:

"We have to see where Wilin is (Sunday). I don’t think at this time it’s a DL situation. But we have to see what happens going forward," Tracy said.

Pomeranz, in his first 43 and 1/3 innings, has a 4.98 ERA and 4.61 FIP. On the other hand, Rosario is sporting a strong .254/.290/.532 slash with 15 homers as the Rockies' backup catcher.

Rockies Vs Padres: Time To Meet Kip Wells Again

The Colorado Rockies enter Saturday's game against the San Diego Padres on a three-game losing streak, two losses to the Pittsburgh Pirates and one to the Padres to open this series. Overall, the Rockies are 2-5 since the second half of the season began -- a position which the Rockies most assuredly did not want to find.

After a 9-5 loss on Friday night, Jeff Francis (2-2, 4.76 ERA) looks to right the ship for the Rockies. He started off his second season well with five innings of one-run ball against the Pirates, which happened to be the one game the Rockies won in that series. However, a rain delay and bad pitches by Rafael Betancourt and Rex Brothers blew the game in the top of the ninth. The Rockies need a walkoff in the bottom of the ninth to take the victory.

Kip Wells (1-3, 2.82 ERA) pitched seven shutout innings against the Rockies at Coors Field on July 1, his first victory of the season. He hasn't quite repeated that success yet, losing his last two starts. Against Houston on July 16, Wells allowed two runs on three hits and five walks in 4.1 innings.

Wilin Rosario Injury Update: Rockies Catcher Day-To-Day With Left Ankle Sprain

Colorado Rockies rookie catcher Wilin Rosario has been solid behind the plate in 2012, so everyone held their breath when he was forced to leave Friday night's game against the San Diego Padres after rolling his ankle while trying to block an errant pitch from Drew Pomeranz in the second inning. Luckily, Rosario only suffered a low-grade ankle sprain, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com, and the 23-year-old backstop is listed as day-to-day.

Rosario has posted a .254/.290/.532 line over 214 plate appearances in 2012. Veteran catcher Ramon Hernandez replaced Rosario on Friday night and will likely fill in until the young prospect is cleared to start again.
