Franklin, 17 years old, completed the 100 meters in 58.85 seconds, a new American record. Rachel Bootsma came in second place with a time of 59.49, leaving Natalie Coughlin's 1:00.06 in third place. Bootsma is joining Franklin in London later in July.

Bonnie Brandon, a Cherry Creek, CO, native finished in fifth with a time of 1:00.82.

A little over 15 minutes before she won this race, Franklin had just completed the 200 meter freestyle semis to qualify for the finals, which will take place on Thursday night. She will also take part in the preliminaries for the 100 meter freestyle, the 200 meter backstroke and the 50 meter freestyle starting on Friday and through the weekend.

It's quite possible Franklin will compete in five events in London.
